Affirmations… life-changing miracle or just a bunch of hype?
That really depends on what you make of them.
Like most things in life, it comes down to mindset. If you think something will work for you, then it will. If you don’t think it will work for you, then it won’t. So whether or not positive affirmations will work for you depends on if you believe they will or not. It’s like the placebo effect for your brain, but that effect can be very powerful.
I’ve personally had great success using positive affirmations to alleviate anxiety and depression, cope with stress and chronic illness, and overall maintain a positive attitude and outlook on life.
What’s important to know about affirmations is that there’s no one-size-fits-all mantra out there. Additionally, there’s no right or wrong way to use them. Positive affirmations aren’t about “doing it right” or “doing it enough,” but about using a tool that’s effective and meaningful for you.
You can’t go wrong with affirmations. If you’re a recovering perfectionist like me, then this is really great news.
Here are some tips for making the most of your positive affirmations. Again, there’s no right or wrong way to use them. Try things out and see what works best for you.
1. Find positive affirmations that resonate with you.
If affirmations were all the same, they’d be pretty boring and ineffective.
Design for everyone is design for no one.
Since there’s no cookie-cutter approach to affirmations, if a phrase doesn’t strike a chord with you, find one that does. There are hundreds if not thousands of positive affirmations out there, and you can even create your own.
You can stick with the same affirmation or set of affirmations every time, or mix things up depending on your mood, situation, or what you want to work on in your life.
Some of am favorite affirmations include:
- I am happy, healthy, and whole.
- I am energized and full of life.
- I am achieving greatness.

2. Build a routine that works for you.
Positive affirmations tend to work best when used regularly (ideally daily) and at least once a day.
“What you do every day matters more than what you do every once in a while.”
– Gretchen Rubin
While I recommend using positive affirmations daily, the timing of your affirmations totally depends on you. It might be helpful to review your daily routine and answer the following questions:
- What time of day do you need the most encouragement? (In the mornings? After work?)
- When do you usually need to relax or de-stress? (Before a phone call? After a difficult conversation?)
- During what types of situations do you need to shift your mindset? (While sitting in traffic? Waiting in line at the grocery store?)
Here are a few ways you can incorporate positive affirmations into your daily routine:
1. Morning
- While drinking your morning cup of coffee / tea
- During your commute to work
- While walking, running, or working out at the gym
2. Evening
- During dinner
- Instead of watching TV
- Before going to bed / falling asleep
3. Throughout the day
- As a type of prayer or meditation
- Flipping the script on negative thoughts (i.e., replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts)
- Whenever you need a pep talk or a pick-me-up

3. Use methods that work for you.
Positive affirmations are all about visualizing possibilities and building belief. There are lots of ways to use affirmations, including having them around you (passive), saying them out loud, or writing them down. I like to post inspirational quotes and affirmations in my home and office, say them out loud, and share them on social media.
Feel free to experiment and find out which method(s) work the best for you.
1. Post affirmations around you
- Screensaver on your phone and/or computer
- Print out for your home, office, and/or car
- Save in your wallet or another place where you’ll see them often
- Share on Pinterest or other social media
2. Say affirmations out loud
- Over and over again until you believe them
- Confidently and enthusiastically in front of the mirror
- In the shower or while you’re getting ready for work
3. Write it down
- Write down the same phrase(s) over and over
- Tell a story / explain why the affirmations are true
- Journal about your thoughts on the phrase(s)
Conclusion
Positive affirmations can be a powerful tool in shifting your mindset and maintaining an optimistic attitude. Regardless of which affirmations you use or how you decide to use them, be proud of yourself for making positive changes and improving your life!
